I’ve said it before (too many times) and I will say it again and again and again: these are proud people. I don’t see it ending well for those who dismiss them as “hillbillies” or “carnies” or whatever derogatory term you can drag out of less enlightened times… Dorothea didn’t like Campbell even implying she might be smarter than him. So yeah… go down that path and see where it leads you…

These are people who are probably used to being underestimated. I wouldn’t be twpsyn enough to do that. I instead will be over here trying to figure out how to kneel beside them… if there is even the remotest possibility to be viewed by them as an equal.

Did it feel intimidating to be in a room with that many people?

Yeah. I mean I wasn’t super afraid per se, but I just felt Intimidated cause I attempted to talk to people but they were silent and I didn’t know what to do. Tried to stand and got told to stay down.

If you think I mean "carny" in any sort of derogatory way, then you misunderstood me. It's not derogatory when you are one. Or when you have been one.

Carnies are smart as hell, sharp as whips, clever as can be and VERY able to take care of themselves. They are very proud, and rightfully so as they are overlooked all the time and treated the same way Travelers are.

So trust me when I say I use the term accurately and correctly for my own family history and my own early lifetime.

Thanks for clarifying. I’ve only ever encountered it used in a derogatory way. Might be a UK/US culture thing. Glad we’re on the same page tho

For sure. The 'pulling off the hood to reveal a crowd of people staring at you' move is a powerful one. The intimidation of it works. I remember having a slight feeling of panic when they did that to me in KC... human nature (or mine anyways) makes you think that you're in trouble. Especially when there are people that you recognize and respect in the crowd.

In the photo with Maddy front and center and the other handlers behind her, Stevie is holding the tape record player.

Yep - Can confirm the tape recorder is the same one (or at least the same model) that I was listening to in the car
